“It’s all about the cups” – Ray Parlour urges Arsenal to focus on Europa League and FA Cup success after West Ham defeat

Arsenal should forget about their ambitions to finish in the top four of the Premier League this season, according to club legend Ray Parlour.

This comes after the Gunners lost 1-0 to West Ham while Chelsea extended their lead over fifth-placed Arsenal to six points with a 2-1 win over Newcastle.

Arsenal have been on a downward spiral since having their 22-game unbeaten run ended

The deficit comes as a huge blow to Unai Emery’s men, who went on a 22-game unbeaten run before being conquered by Southampton in December.

Since then they have won just two of their last six matches – at home to Burnley in the Premier League and away to Blackpool in the FA Cup.

And Parlour, who won a number of trophies in north London including three Premier League titles believes it’s time for Arsenal to ditch any top-four aspirations for this season and focus on the FA Cup and Europa League.

Speaking to talkSPORT after the Hammers defeat, Parlour said: “Poor performance from Arsenal but for me it’s all about the cups this year.

Emery won the Europa League three times when he was Sevilla manager

“Realistically, top four would have been so difficult to make with the teams they’re up against with Chelsea and Tottenham going well and watching Liverpool beat Brighton and Man City. United could go on a run with their new manager in tow.

“I’m looking at the Europa League from Arsenal’s point of view and the FA Cup.

“Over the years the FA Cup has probably kept Arsene Wenger in a job so these are the sort of trophies they’ve got to try and win this year.”
